and

The Divine Designer

One of the best kept secrets is a little thing called The Fibonacci Sequence, which actually is a pretty big thing. Believed to have been discovered some 1300 years ago by mathematicians in India, Leonardo of Pisa, aka Fibonacci, brought this enlightenment to the west where, at the time, they were still using Roman Numerals for calculations. Italian born Fibonacci, who lived from around 1170 to 1240, was the son of a successful merchant who worked primarily in North Africa. He often traveled with his father and was exposed to various cultures and the Hindu-Arabic numerical systems.

Widely regarded as the most influential mathematician of the Middle Ages, his book, Libre Abaci (Book of Calculation) was published in 1202 and revolutionized western mathematics. While studying growth patterns of rabbit populations, he came across the impeccable sequence. It’s not a complicated formula. It is a simple string of numbers whereas the proceeding number is the sum of the two previous numbers as in, 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89…to infinity. By drawing a geometric graph with these numbers a spiral is created. This spiral, called the Golden Spiral, can be seen in many natural objects such as sunflowers, seashells, pineapples, pinecones, the curve of a wave as it crashes into the shore, and many other places. Although not present in everything, it occurs often enough to be extremely consequential. For plants who have incorporated the Golden Spiral, it is the most efficient way for them to bring in sunlight and water for growth and propagation. The number of petals and seeds of many flowers are found to be in the sequence and, as if that were not enough, if you divide the larger number by the next lower number you come up with a figure close to 1.618034... known as the Golden Ratio or Phi. This ratio is said to be perfectly proportioned and innately pleasing to the eye. DaVinci, Michelangelo, Dali and other famous artists have applied Phi in some of the most revered works of art. Even today, artists seek out this aesthetically pleasing composition to perfect their craft.

The orientation and structure of The Pyramids of Giza are laid out according to the Golden Ratio. It can be found in the constructions of The Parthenon, Taj Mahal and The cathedral of Notre-Dame. Architecture, art, science and music have all been influenced by these ethereal elements. 

The numbers, spiral and ratio occur often enough to give rise to the concept of the Divine Designer or as I like to call it, God.

There are many mysteries that remain elusive for humanity and this mathematical miracle is a little insight to what we aspire to perceive. Though humanity has attempted to look beyond the mere facade of impermanence, it's clear that the more answers we find, the more questions arise. Still, some things yield glimpses into the astounding world we live in and, more importantly, what lives in us. God's eternal design is ingrained within all things. 

When we gaze upon such wonders as the majestic mountains, astounding canyons, and sprawling seas, we see the powerful, vast significance they possess. It’s not merely a feast for the eyes, it can be a deeply spiritual experience and can promote sacred awareness.

Our journey through life takes us to breathtaking scenery, but It really doesn’t have to be towering mountains or really cool canyons that can be awe-inspiring. There are splendors that exist in all places. This perception can improve our reality, bring enlightenment and a profound, abiding reverence of the universal Living Spirit.

With all the inventions and conveniences developed over many centuries, the standard, and ultimate example of divinity, remains the natural marvels of creation including God’s ultimate achievement, humanity. We are made in His image, giving us an advanced sense of purpose.

The Fibonacci’s numbers, and its prevalence is unmistakable. This pattern, which is extraordinarily common, highly underrated and noticeably overlooked in formal education, presents a new found regard of life.

So here we are, confronted  with the realization that this hidden key, embedded in creation, is an important acknowledgement of the Divine Designer, who also incorporated it into the human anatomy as well…we have two hands, five fingers on each hand, two eyes, one nose, two ears and it goes on and on. This occurs throughout our bodily system. Our intrinsic connection to Creator, each other and all things is evident. 

Some people believe that math is the language of God. There is no doubt that arithmetic has always been a key component in achieving insight and understanding of our world and beyond. It is a desirable, noble endeavor that has served humanity well. Only now does it become remarkably apparent that there is exquisite, infinite beauty in numbers.
